Allright, my lady gave me a Roku Box for Christmas. So now I can watch Netflix, Hulu and a bunch of other goodies on my HD TV.
You job (collectively) is to give me a list of Shows / Movies to watch, and they must in some sense be game related or game inspirational. That is a very lose definition as far as I am concerned. All Sci-Fi and Fantasy is somewhat game related or inspirational, but I'm looking for stuff I probably wouldn't find on my own.
My personal favorite pick will get a PDF copy of the Swords & Wizardry Complete Rulebook and the next 2 favorite picks will get PDF Copies of Bean! The D2 RPG.
Everyone who enters and is a Google Connect Follower of the site will be entered to win a prize package courtesy of RPGNow worth over $125.
Contest ends 1/1/11.
Greg from The Errant RPG Blog is working with me on the first contest for 2011. That might actually require some work from you lads and lasses ;)
I originally wanted to recommend the Cadfael movies (but they are DVD only) Check them out when you can. For my official suggestion, check out "The Color of Magic". If you haven't read the book; check that out too! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteLet's see what I can pull from left field...
ReplyDeleteRio Bravo - My favorite John Wayne Western.
Flesh & Blood - Rutger Hauer Flick. Gritty & Medieval.
Big Trouble in Little China - If you haven't seen this, you're in for a treat!
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - Talk about your fun-house dungeons!
Brotherhood of the Wolf - My favorite French Film.:)
You definitely should watch Brotherhood of the Wolf.
ReplyDeleteFurther,

The Princess Bride
Spirited Away

My post on the last one:

Well a quick check of Hulu reveals several of my favorite anime which I have found a good source for D&D ideas. Inuyasha is one of my favorite particularly the temple made out of a Inuyasha's demon father. Full Metal Alchemist is also good although it is more steampunk. The Slayers is very D&D like in its structure although it is way too silly to sometimes. I also recommend Berserk even though I didn't see it on Hulu you may be able to find it somewhere else (be warned it's very dark).
ReplyDeleteFilms (sorry if too obvious):
ReplyDeleteDragonslayer
Excalibur
Krull
All Ray Harryhausen "Sinbad" films: Seventh Voyage, Golden Voyage, Eye of the Tiger
Harryhausen's Jason and the Argonauts
Dark City
Shows (less a speciality for me):
Freaks and Geeks (NOT fantasy but wonderful and includes D&D players)
Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles (First Season anyway)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Xena (lowbrow but great fun)
Damn, you folks are giving me lots to look at! Awesome, keep it up! ;)
ReplyDeleteT.V. show: Warehouse 13, the Twilight Zone Twin Peaks.
ReplyDeleteMovies: Second Hand Lions, The Darjeeling Limited, Groundhog Day, and Big Fish.
Of course people may say my movie picks aren't game related, but as far as inpiration they are very good for that in a unique sort of way. They all have great, unique characters, and have unusual situations the characters have to deal with.
Yeah, I could see Groundhog Day being played out in a Paranoia session ;)
ReplyDeleteMovies:
ReplyDeleteGreen Street Hooligans: Elijah Wood (Frodo) is kicked out of Harvard and visits his sister in England, where he starts running with some hooligans who support the greatest football team in the world, West Ham United (my team, can't you tell?). What I like about it is the glimpse of psychology that has people who are normally quite well-to-do taking part in these incredibly violent "gangs."
TV:
Sons of Anarchy: It's about an Outlaw Motorcycle Club, but it's great inspiration for a campaign where your characters are all members of a criminal organization. It's the best written and acted show on television right now, IMHO.
Torchwood: It's a slightly more serious spin-off of Dr. Who with a team in Cardiff tracking down and eliminating aliens. In particular, the first series episode "They Keep Killing Suzie" offers an interesting take on what I like to call "gamer sociopathic syndrome" where PCs will take ruthless measures without a full realization of the consequences.
Films
ReplyDeleteConan (all films, including Red Sonja)
Beastmaster
Labyrinth
Dark Cristal
The Lord of the Rings
Le pacte des loups (dont know the name in english)
Indiana Jones (all films, the best for Pulp games)
Series
Fringe
The Event
Stargate Universe
The Hexer (polish film and serie about the Sapkowsky character)
I can personally recommend Defying Gravity. Though based on it, I've had a recent mini-series The Deep recommended to me.
ReplyDeleteI'm also very pleased with the British Being Human. Though not sure of the RP utility.
My favourite TV shows this year have been.
ReplyDeleteTrue Blood
Fringe
Caprica
Sherlock Holmes (2010 BBC mini series)
Burn Notice
Human Target
The Walking Dead (but I know you're already into that)

The Hangover
The Fantastic Mr.Fox
The Departed

I watch way too much.
I cannot second Sons of Anarchy enough!!! The best drama I've watched in years. Dead Gentlemen productions are also good.
ReplyDeleteSpartacus: Blood and Sand and the new series coming out January 21st, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. My favorite series from this year and I am sure the new one out will be just as fantastic.
ReplyDeleteCheck out Lonesome Dove (instant Netflix viewing). It has a very good old school wilderness adventure vibe. I just wrote about it on my blog if you want more details.
ReplyDeleteAfter that, I'm partial to horror movies from the 60's such as Countess Dracula and Twins of Evil
Roku is awesome, btw.
Oh and don't forget Seven Samuri too.
ReplyDeleteSome T.V. series:
ReplyDeletefrom National Geographic
World's Most Dangerous Roads- these are truly bad and makes a metropolitan commute in a blizzard look like a joyful romp in the park
(almost all of the National Geographic channel has some gaming use on it)
http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/exploration-adventure
from History Channel
Cities of the Underworld- just awesome, what's under the cities of today.
Life After People- not as cool as it could be but lot's of decent images and a peek at what happens to stuff left unattended.
Monsterquest- monster hunting in the real world
Stan Lee's Superhumans - odd folks that do some odd things
Chasing Mummies- mummy hunting
Lost Worlds- lot's of places and times
more history channel shows: http://www.history.com/shows
movies with gamerosity:
The Sasquatch Gang- goofy youth comedy with boffer weapons and a scooby-doo sorta situation.
City of Ember- a youth adventure about an underground society that is winding down.
Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel- a clever and fun time-travel comedy
All of Avatar: The Last Airbender is on Netflix Instant. It is the best children's fantasy show that has ever existed. No joke. It balances humor, pathos, hard decisions and some of the most breathtaking martial arts action ever animated.
ReplyDeleteYou will not be disappointed.
Keep em coming folks!
ReplyDeleteGood stuff
My list is short, but I'm a late comer, so lots of my ideas were spoken. All of my choices are streamable on Netflix.
ReplyDeleteTV: The Black Adder, I love this show.
Conan the Adventurer (true Conan it's not, but fun, it is)
Movies: Heavy Metal, I just watched this for the first time in a long time the other day. There are some great sword & planet stories here with just enough cheese and boobs to keep me interested.
Mad Men: All
ReplyDeleteSpartacus: Blood and Sand
on netflix(instant play):
ReplyDeletegene generation, malice in wonderland, seven samurai, hidden fortress, rashomon
