I really dig FATE. I liked it in SotC, I was excited with what I saw with Starblazer's Adventures, Strands of FATE kicked my imagination into high gear - and I'll probably never play it.
Believe it or not, I'm okay with that. I'm actually afraid that FATE might not play as well as it reads, because it reads very well. Okay, maybe that doesn't make the most sense. The thing is, SotC reads better then any game I could run, and I'm not sure my old gaming group would be able to sink their teeth into the FATE system, as they are big on crunch, which FATE seems to grind under its capital letters.
I won't pack SotC away, as it is a good read unto itself. The rest of my FATE is in PDF, so I have access to it wherever my iPad is. I may not get a chance to play with FATE, but I'll read it. That can't be too bad.

When we played Dresden Files I struggled with that fact that more vocal players, those who were comfortable with wheeling, dealing and pressing a point, we able to do more in the system. For example, they could get the GM to agree that multiple Aspects were relevant in a given situation even though some of felt that the layers was talking and talking and talking in order to get the GM to relent.
ReplyDeleteThat, of course, is not a failing of the system, but just something I have seen in games where narrative control is up for grabs.
I've read all the way through Adventure - the pulp game - but never played it. Anytime I would suggest it to our groups in the past they always wanted to play Call of Cthulhu instead.
ReplyDeleteI feel the exact same way about FATE. I love reading Starblazer Adventures and have read the rule book multiple times, but I'll never actually play it.
ReplyDeleteIt's not that I am not willing, but I just don't know any gamers that can handle playing it. every gamer I know is terrified to try anything outside of AD&D 2e or D&D 3e/Pathfinder. The fews times I got them to do it at least one of them whined and moaned the whole time and caused the rest of the group to give up.
Plus I no longer have a group, which makes convincing them to try something new even harder.
I'll actually be playing FATE for the first time tonight. I'll probably post about the experience, but I'm cautiously optimistic; we've got an open-minded GM and adventurous players. We'll see how it goes!
