After yesterday's fairly vocal discussion regarding Mike Mearl's One Hour Game Session article, I realized that the default 4 hour session may no longer be the default these days.
So, how long are your gaming sessions and what game system do you use?
(I'll be posting later my thoughts on some game systems that I feel are suited for shorter game sessions)

Right now the only thing i'm role playing in is a 3.5 Most of the time we play on Sat. from 3pm. to 8pm-ish. If we are in the heat of battle it will go longer, but we try and cut it at 8 o'clock.
ReplyDeleteI do play some Advanced Squad Leader. That can last for a hour or two. Sometimes on the larger battle's we leave it set up for later days to come back too.
The PF game we just wrapped up averaged around 5 hours per session, so maybe 4 hours of actual game-play.
ReplyDeleteThe G+ Labyrinth Lord game we've started up went for about 3 hours the last time, but there were over 30 minutes of "technical difficulty" cutting into that. We've got another session this weekend, scheduled for 2.5 hours or so. We'll see how it goes.
We play B/X D&D and run about 5-6 hours per session, usually with a meal break of about a half hour. It usually takes at least half an hour to get all the socializing out of the way before we start though and we don't exactly keep up a ferocious pace either, there is a lot of socializing and non-gaming during our games; so probably only 1/2 to 2/3 of the time we spend at the game table is spent actually gaming when you count the time to settle in and the meal break.
ReplyDeleteIf have a regular online group and we play once a week for 2.5h and an irregular one with 5h sessions. My offline group plays once a month and we play for about 5h.
ReplyDeleteWarhammer Fantasy Roleplay 1e/2e at the moment, 2.5 - 3 hours, from 8pm to 10.30-11pm (after the kids are in bed, but with an early enough finish to get up with them at whatever unholy time they decide to wake the next day!).
ReplyDeleteBack in the day, as a teenager, we would play BECMI (well, BE, as those are the sets we had) D&D for whole days.
We play 2.5 to 3 hours on a fairly regular basis. Our night is Wednesday nights at a FLGS, and we skip weeks here and there due to real life stuff, but otherwise have been fairly consistent for over a year. 2.5 to 3 hours seems to be a good amount of time for us. We've been running C&C, but
ReplyDeleteI've wrapped up that campaign as of last night and am working on starting a Labyrinth Lord campaign to replace it, starting in about a month.
I play in two Pathfinder campaigns and we usually run them about 2.5 hours.
