An Amazing Kickstarter - It Must Be Fate - FATE Core That Is!

I've liked the Fate System ever since I stumbled across it in Spirit of the Century a few years back. I've always thought it had the potential for some really fun campaigns  but there's been one thing holding me back over the years - I've never quite understood the rules.

Sounds silly, don't it? Liking a system you don't grok. Maybe it's more of a "potential like".

I also own The Dresden Files, which in many ways is a precursor to Apocalypse World - lets see how confusing we can make the system as we present it in this uber hip way. Yeah, Dresden didn't help me much.

So, now Evil Hat has released their Fate Core System Kickstarter. Funding has been open for 2 days thus far, and the goal of $3,000 has been surpassed and had hit $64,950  $65,070  $65,304 as I write this.

Holy shit! FASA, see what can happend when you put together a Kickstarter in the "right way"?

Evil Hat claims the new Fate Core will be easy to understand. I'm going to have to see if they are right.

$10 gets you access to the Fate Core Draft, and all expansions that get funded via the Kickstater.

$30 gets you the above and a hard cover book.

I'll be in for $30...

(edit - a pledge of $1 or more gets you immediate access to the current Fate Core draft - it's 304 pages)

  1. I'm in the same boat you are. I own several different Fate games, but never really "got" the rules. I backed the KS, and starting reading the beta rules, and they seem much easier to understand. As I bonus, since i backed at $10 dollars, I am going to get a bunch of other PDFs for free!

  2. Okay, I'm gonna get in on this one. I was on the fence before, but I really like the openness of the system. I could turn it into just about anything, I think.

  3. I haven't jump into any kickstarters but I think I will do this. We tried Dresden but it was a little much for the group. However, I liked Fate.

    Thanks for posting this.

  4. While I am not a huge fan of FATE, it can be fun.

Plus a Kung-fu Gorilla with a cybernetic arm? That's just off the scale awesome.

  5. I've read through Spirit of the Century, played in a single Spirit of the Season game, and played in a Fate game set in Ravenloft, and I STILL don't really understand the system. Glad I'm not the only one...

That said, I think I'm going to chip in on this, too. There is at least one person in my group that I think would absolutely love the Fate Mechanics. I just gotta get it together to run it for him.

  6. I've owned SotC, and read it, and considered using the dF as the skills system in an OSR game... but, I too feel I don't really understand the system. But I'm not very good at, much-less used to, playing "Story Games", and it comes of very story gamey which old-school traditional RPG-ers seem to have a hard time grokking.

Is there a good Actual Play video or podcast out there? A good one being, one that is easy to understand and learn from.
