What Was / Is Your Favorite RPG From Your Perspective as a Player?

Truth to tell, I never got to play much (A)D&D. I ran it a lot, but rarely got to play it after my initial introduction to it. DM was my primary role.

I did get to play other RPGs as a player, mostly Rifts and Battlelords of the 23rd Century. Dave was our primary non-D&D GM, and these were his games of choice.

Of the two, Rifts was the game I had the most fun with as a player. I had little concern with play balance amongst the different occupations (or lack there off) and my first and favorite character was a Crazy. Needless to say, he died a good death. A crazy death, but a good death ;)

So, what was / is your favorite RPG from a player's perspective (which can differ from your GM's perspective)?

  1. I have to say that I have two loves when it comes to RPG's. My first is Shadowrun. The system and setting were just amazing to me. Second is Mechwarrior, since my first tabletop game was Battletech and I am a huge fan of the fiction behind the game.

  2. Nightlife by Stellar Games. System was..... well... antiquated by our standards. But the setting was pure fun. Many great times.

  3. Vampire: the Masquerade is still tops, I had so much fun with that game. Next up is definitely a tie between the Savage Shadowrun game I was in and Star Frontiers (but my Star Frontiers DM is freakin' awesome).

  4. Traveller. Any edition (although only the "official" editions, which include any that involve Marc, specifically CT, MT, T4, and T5, plus three editions without Marc: TNE, GT, and MgT; I base this on the list in front of T5), but particularly MegaTraveller.

I also still like playing GURPS a lot, but if I start seriously including other games, then I'd end up with a very long list. But, I guess I can include GURPS because I'm setting up to play a solo game of it using Mythic GME.

  5. Loved both Rifts and Shadowrun. Played Rifts much longer. Died a few deaths, normally due to alcohol intake and bravado..Me "I'm gonna do.." GM "Are you sure?" Me Hell, yeah...darn... Still all those fusion blocks, plasma gernades and Glitter Boys made it so much fun. Oh, and the nucular botwiller too

  7. My favourite game is Call of Cthulhu but I tend to run it more than I play it. Other than that, I've really enjoyed Pendragon and would love to play it more often.

  8. Third Edition Gamma World is the only one I've played much and it was the crack cocaine of gaming. (I mostly referee since high school.)

  9. I've had great games in several systems so I'm not sure I have a favorite RPG. System has always been way down the line for me in importance. I guess if I had to chose one it would be Swords & Wizardry tied with GURPS.

  10. Shadowrun 2.
I enjoyed a short campaign of the German RPG 'Midgard' as a player, as well.

  11. I hardly ever get to be a player, and these days I rarely want to....but the systems I most enjoyed as a player were AD&D 2nd edition,GURPS 3rd, and Everway.

  12. Shadowrun. The characters are larger than life, have their back up against a wall, it feels like your choices matter both in character generation and in game play, and I loved all the options available.

That said, Shadowrun is the game I hate to run as a GM due to its difficulty to write balanced encounters. Encounters either kill my players or they stomp all over them - I prefer to challenge the players and I found it so difficult to do with Shadowrun.

  13. I think my favorites are most based on the fun I had playing them more than the system.. So that being said Basic/AD&D 1 just because so much of my childhood was tied in with these games I played with my friends.. Second would be Star Wars Saga Editions just because of how over the top and crazy our campaign is.

  14. If I have to pick one, it'd be GURPS.

Though the one I miss is D&D, since I run it a lot more than I get to play it.
