Another "Pay What You Want" RPG - Westwater (OSR B/X Fantasy Western)

Looking to have a dwarven gunslinger? Look no further. Westwater is a Fantasy Western wuth roots in the OSR. So, you can play it with spells, magic and fantasy races OR you can play it as a straight up western RPG.

I'm thinking the first option might be a way to get some mileage out of the various Deadlands sourcebooks for those of us that don't play Savage Worlds.

As always, with Pay What You Want, the price is always right.

Westwater is going to my iPad later today.

From the blurb:

Back in the early 80s, B/X was one of my groups favorite RPGs.  While there were Wild West RPGs that existed, we really wanted to play in that genre using Tom Moldvay's system.  Thanks to the OGL, we can now share that with you!

Westwater uses the OGL to be completely compatible with any other B/X rules system.  While the core of the game mixes traditional 19th Century history with fantasy, there are guidelines that allow you to play the game modeled after realistic 19th century themes, or with a fully magical and fantastical theme.

So choose your gunslinger, holy man, monster hunter, mountain man, outlaw, and more classes, and earn your name in the Wild West!

This version is the no art version, and is designed to be a free/pay what you want model.

  1. Cool. Thanks for the heads up. I'll check it out. Incidently, do you know, was there a KS for this? I remember one along these lines. (I didn't fund, b/c of the fantasy - I've little interest in mixing that in, and b/c I have never funded one).

Didn't get the funding (I assume that folks were refunded, I really have no idea how KS works) and he went ahead and released it, sans art, anyway. I think that's quite cool. Class act I'd say.

  2. If it was a KS that didn't fully fund, no money would have been collected in the first place. I agree that it's pretty cool that it was released anyway.

Also, has anyone else noticed a bit of a surge in OSR Westerns lately? I can think of at least two besides this one ('Go Fer Yer Gun' and 'Shotguns and Saddles'). Just a thought - either way I'll be checking out this one!

  3. Hopefully I can answer that. The KS didn't exactly fail, per se, as it was decided that a KS wasn't the best avenue to pursue for this type of project, so I canceled it. I decided that the best way to go about such a niche product was to emulate LL, and put out a free version for whoever wanted it. Since quality art is so expensive, that was the reason for the KS, and since I could put out a version without art, the KS wasn't needed. Maybe someday down the road it can be revisited, but ultimately I just wanted to share an experience we had with others, and I think this is the best way to do it. My only hope is that folks are able to pull something valuable out of it to have fun themselves. If so, mission success.
