Pay What You Want - The Tomb of Rakoss the Undying (OSR Adventure)

Yep, a new PWYW release for the OSR - The Tomb of Rakoss the Undying (for levels 4-6). Actually, the publisher, Mischief Inc say they want you to grab it for free, but they will gladly take a donation.

It's interesting to note that PWYW releases hit the New Release Page on RPGNow while free releases don't. Kind of makes sense to release as PWYW in that case.

From the blurb:

Rakoss was a great wizard of ages past who served the Emperor of Maere. Tales tell of his prowess as a military strategist, but they also tell of his fall. It is said that although he won campaign after campaign for his emperor, just one failure earned the wrath of his master. The Emperor had Rakoss, his generals, strategists and personal guard sealed in a tomb somewhere in the Ganlaw Mountains, and cursed them.

Who knows what treasure was buried with Rakoss and his retinue, or what horrors remain to test any who might enter the tomb. Certainly only a brave few would dare seek out the final resting place of Rakoss, and even fewer can survive the terrors of The Tomb of Rakoss the Undying!

"The Tomb of Rakoss the Undying" is a challenging adventure for 3-6 characters of level 4 to 6.

Note: This product is intended to be FREE!  Please do not pay for it if you do not want to.

That said, if you wish to "donate" to our future development, you can pay any amount you want when you "purchase" this adventure. Those who pay for this adventure will be granted a "Founder" rank on our Mischief, Inc. member forums.

  1. Neat, points for presentation and layout, big bonus points for free, and minus a million for using boxed text.

    1. After quickly perusing the module, the things that I'd most like to see changed are a move to a more tactically interesting map and more unique treasures.

Stock magic items (+2 swords, etc.), while irksome, usually don't take me too long to change to something more interesting if the adventure itself is really worthwhile. Uninteresting, linear maps, on the other hand, are more discouraging.

  2. It looks pretty cool. And you can't argue with the price.

  3. Had a read, must say a little uninspiring, the writing is a bit bland and there are a bunch of holes/lose ends in the story, but it did get me thinking about how to fill those whole and tie up the loose ends so i'm not sure really if its a good thing or a bad thing? Id go with good, but the lacking felt unintentional. Formidable price however so cant quibble too much.

  4. Thanks for the plug here!

To answer a few of the questions, comments here. We were deliberately going for a 1980s TSR feel, thus the boxed text and map design. Many of the layout decisions were made to evoke a 1st Edition feel.

As far as the story goes, we were very cognizant of the fact that we were providing approximately half of the content we intend to have in future products (or would expect from commercially available "for profit" adventures). Rakoss is a Vecna like figure in our campaign world and we intend that he will reappear in future titles.

We were a little afraid (given attitudes in the OSR community) about providing too much tactics. A lot of that customer base is militantly against tactical combat, preferring Theater of the Mind combats We tried to strike a balance.

Rest assured we do appreciate the feedback and will see if we can improve as we go. The best place to make a difference is on our forums at http://www.mischiefinc.net/phpBB3. They are in a little of a disarray at this point due to a MOD install failure, but I am working doggedly at fixing the issues. Please join, and stick around. We want as much polite, detailed feedback as we can get.
