It's Official! D&D Next to Release in Summer of 2014

Wizards of the Coast Announces Thrilling Dungeons & Dragons Launch for Summer 2014

Players fight the most fearsome monster of all time in an exciting multi-platform gaming experience.

December 19, 2013 – Renton, WA – Wizards of the Coast today announced that the highly-anticipated new rules system for Dungeons & Dragons will release in summer 2014.  After nearly two years of an open public playtest and more than 175,000 playtest participants, the rules are complete. Players will be immersed in rich storytelling experiences across multiple gaming platforms (WTF does this mean?) as they face off against the most fearsome monster of all time.

“Just like a perfectly balanced party, Wizards has worked cohesively with fans, designers and partners to create the next generation of D&D,” said Nathan Stewart, Brand Director for Dungeons & Dragons. “We whole-heartedly thank all of the play test participants, whose feedback has proven instrumental in shaping the future of Dungeons & Dragons.”

More information about the exciting Dungeons & Dragons entertainment offerings will be available in early 2014. To learn more about D&D, visit dungeonsanddragons.com.

  2. The multiple gaming platform bit is worriesome.

Perhaps they've fixed their virtual tabletop

The digital component of 4e's roll out was badly bungled.

  3. The digital component of 4E AND 3E's roll out was badly bungled... I won't hold my breath.

  4. My take is that the "Multi-platform" refers to using all editions of D&D. My other perspective on D&D Next is that we'll see that the launch will center on Gary's original Greyhawk Dungeon. When Gygax Games went silent and walk away from Troll Lord Games and Mongoose I'm thinking perhaps Wizard of the Coast had a pretty good deal for them. Personally I'd love to see Troll Lord Games finish what they started with Castle Zagyg...anyway, one can always have hope.

  5. I wonder if multi-platform means role-playing game, board game, PC, and mobile.

  6. I believe that they're actually referring to the integration of video games, the D&D Encounters, and the books as they've been doing with the Sundering Event that's been going on. Greg Leeds, CEO at Wizards, has mentioned that his goal is to push the product forward through as many different forms of media as possible in a way that doesn't devalue the brand as a whole.

  7. Mein Gott, has there ever been a more generic-sounding press release? How many bland corporate buzzwords can you fit?

  8. Yes, it will release in Summer 2014 if it comes out on time. There are still no OD&D reprints on the shelves.

  9. Multiplatform... I'm guessing they'll have still have Dungeon and Dragon as online subscription offerings (booo!), continue pdf sales for all TSR and WotC materials, and will be working to put out CRPGs based on the new rules. Add novels, boardgames, Encounters, and (possibly) a licensed movie and you have all sorts of geeking goodness.

  10. I assume "Multi-platform" for the "storytelling experience" to mean what was stated in the earlier interview, modules and "Encounters" will be playable in all editions.

  11. Hey, look! Their "About" section gives us all a spiffy new title: "lifestyle gamer"

"Wizards of the Coast LLC, a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ:HAS), is the leader in entertaining the lifestyle gamer."
