Podcasts - Do You Listen to Them and Which Ones do You Listen to?

I find myself listening to gaming podcasts on my daily commute, to the point that I probably should just cancel my Sirius / XM as it is hardly ever used these days.

My plan (as suggested last night by +Joe D ), is to put a link of gaming podcasts on the right side of The Tavern's page, so the readers can sample what are some of the better podcast out there, in my humble opinion.

The thing is, I am sure I'm missing some of the better ones myself, so I need you, the patrons of this fine establishment, to point me in the right direction.

My personal "go to" list of podcast includes the following (in no particular order besides alphabetical):

Dead Games Society

Fear the Boot

Happy Jacks

RPG Circus

Roll for Initiative

Save or Die

Spellburn

THAC0's Hammer

What say you? What's missing from this list? What have I overlooked over the last 2 years? Tell me.

  1. I'll add rppr and gamer's table to your list. They both do a lot of non-fantasy games and have great ap's for long drives.

  2. I also listen to Saving the Game and The Jank Cast. I avoid actual play podcasts and podcasts that routinely do interviews. I just don't find these to be interesting.

  3. Postcards from the Dungeon is in my top 5. I have also appreciated The Tome Show...

  4. Need to work harder to get the Firing Squad on the list. :-)

  5. Obsidian Portal's Haste podcast is a good one to add to the list.

  6. And we appreciate your patronage, Erik. I'll take every download I can get :)

  7. Nope. I understand podcasts even less than I get talk radio.

  8. I like Dice of Doom. Happy Jacks is my favorite.

  9. I am pleased you are going to do this list. I listen to the best known ones, but a list would be awesome. It will kill my work productivity and anything that accomplishes that makes me happy :)

  10. Every now and then I give one a listen, but I rarely can finish an episode. I'm ready to try another again soon. But so far...not so much.

  11. I still kind of think of the interwebs as a primarily written medium. I guess I still think it's 1999 or something.

I don't listen often, but Misdirected Mark is one you might check out.
It's not a gaming podcast, but Welcome to Night Vale is pretty damned awesome. And I think it would appeal to most gamers.

  12. The only ones I've listened to are Save or Die, Roll for Initiative, and ThacO's Hammer. My favorite has been SOD but all have their merits.

  13. I'm a big fan of NPC-Cast - RPGs and board games. The Good Friends of Jackson Elias is a nice horror-gaming pod cast. Actual plays I listen to include Skype of Cthulhu and Drunks and Dragons. Look forward to seeing the list and getting some new ideas.

  14. I listen to a lot of gaming podcasts at work. I'm familiar with all the ones on your list, but most of my favorites are not on it. In addition to Fear the Boot, they include:

    Carpe GM
    NPC Cast
    Play on Target
    Gamerstable
    Dice of Doom

Even though I play old school games almost exclusively, I don't always find the podcasts dedicated to old school gaming to be very satisfying. Even though I still listen to them, I get especially impatient with the myopic focus on this or that particular version of old school D&D that you get with the WIld Games Productions podcasts (SOD, RFI, etc.).

Happy Jacks is the only one I refuse to listen to anymore -- and that's just because I find all the belching to be infuriating.

  17. I'll use your Sirius subscription :). I don't have the attention span to listen to podcasts.. I find myself mentally wandering after a few minutes. I have a hard time with audiobooks as well. Reading has a way of focusing my attention on something like no other...

    1. Precisely why I have my Firing Squad interviews transcribed!

  18. Thank you so much for mentioning us at Save or Die--we appreciate being appreciated! But to add to your list, a relatively new podcast that DM Mike and I enjoy very much is The GagMen Podcast. They tend to run "edition neutral", but they include a short adventure they created in every episode as a free PDF download for the harried gamemaster. All genres are touched upon.

  19. ...and for my lovely wife, I'll add the Gag Men link. ;)

  20. SoD and RFI are old stand bys, as well as Gamers Table. I recently started listening to NPC Cast and Dead Games Society and both are quite good. Non-gaming, but related casts include Cromcast, HP Podcraft, and the Double Shadow podcast... literary podcasts covering Howard, Lovecraft and Smith, respectively.

  23. 2 GMs 1 Mic is a podcast that mostly talks about the new generation of story games rather than the OSR, but I like it anyway. Happy Jacks is my favorite.
