Games From the Basement - True 20

During the time I was no longer actively playing RPGs but was most certainly buying and reading them, I found True 20. Heck, i was even played in a play by post True 20 game WAY back in the day, but getting caught posting from work kinda put a damper on that ;)

I think what I liked most about True 20 were the sample settings. Damn, I need to dig out that True 20 setting book (Worlds of Adventure) I have buried somewhere and convert one or two of them to Swords & Wizardry. Should be easy enough, as they were mostly fluff if I recall correctly.

Shame it pretty much is "abandon-ware" these days. I think the surge in popularity that Savage Worlds went thru, as well as the pull back on D20 games in general, pulled the rug out from under True 20.

  1. This blog post is curiously timed as I'm currently in a True20 resurgence, myself. I still really dig this system.

  2. I ran the "Tales of the Caliphate Nights" T20 setting a couple of times at cons. People liked it, and it was very satisfying to run. Paradigm Concepts did a good job with that product - still the most authentic Arabian Nights setting as far as I am concerned.

  3. I remember playing a True-20 campaign set in a skewed 1970's. There were a variety interesting aspects to the campaign: a Fantasy Island knock-off, zombies from "Omega Man," and space aliens manipulating the humans.

  4. True20 was awesome; if you go back far enough on my blog there are some True20 posts. Unfortunately, it came out in the same time period as 4e and Pathfinder, so there was a lot of noise in the RPG atmosphere and it just never got traction.

A lot the True20 material is on my list to convert to S&W eventually. I think I've got all of it except the Warrior's Handbook.

  5. DuBeers, that sounds like the _Damnation Decade_ sourcebook. One of my favorite rpg products ever.

  7. I enjoyed the heck out of True 20 and wish it had gotten more love too.

Converting the True20 Adept to S&W (or and OSR game) would be interesting.
