I have the 3 D&D 5e Core Books.
I have the Starter Set.
I have the Basic Rules in an early printed format.
I have the Dragonspear Castle and Hoard of the Dragon Queen.
I have the new DM Shield, still in shrink wrap, it went immediately on the shelf with the rest.
Sadly, I hear mostly good stuff about 5e but have had little time to do more than browse the pages of the books I have. Little free time to spend learning a system that isnt going to be played by my regular group anytime soon.
I literally feel I'm just a collector at this point.
Is it just me? Are others doing the same?
Ah. For me its the fate of many other games I own.
ReplyDeleteAh. For me its the fate of many other games I own.
ReplyDeleteI've done the same thing. Bought 'em, read 'em, sticking with what I've been playing the last few years. I like some of the concepts and have been stealing them for my game, so the books are not going to waste.
ReplyDeleteSo far this seems to be what my 5e books are doing. I intended to play with them, but it hasn't happened much yet.

ReplyDeleteNo 5E in my future, but yeah, I've got a bookshelf full of gaming material that will likely never be read.
ReplyDeleteI will gladly take them from your hands :) My daughter is a struggling 5e DM at this point..
ReplyDeleteI have the Starter Set, the PHB, the DMG, and a spiral-bound print of the Basic Rules (both Player and DM in one binding), and I'm actually running a game! It's on Roll20, and I'm running Dwimmermount (although the dungeon itself is for later in the game; the PCs are down in Yarm doing more generic FRP stuff.)
ReplyDeleteI'm running 3 5e games right now...
ReplyDeleteOn the whole I quite like what I've experienced of 5e - I ran the boxed set before the core rules were fully out in print (WTF Wotc?!) and I'm currently in a group playing the Hoard of the Dragon Queen... but what bollock-brained wazzik came up with the indexing system in the new rules? I've never had to jump through so many hoops of 'see this' only to be sent someplace else, only to wind up with a bit of a non-answer. The proofreader (singular - I refuse to believe they employed more than one monkey) needs to sack up and hand their pay back!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I've been pretty disappointed in the organization of some rules. The class-based exceptions to specific mechanics in the the class section, but because those appear first in the book, you end up reading the exceptions before you read the "standard" behavior of the rule. This makes some rules appear to work very oddly...
DeleteIf they had just grouped the standard mechanic together with the class-based exceptions (even if it meant some redundancy in the book), much of the book would be simpler to reference.
Admitting you have a problem is the first step to a cure...
ReplyDeleteI don't have all the core books, just the Player's Handbook. I have Hoard of the Dragon Queen, and I'd like to run that and see how I like the system before I buy any more books. Unfortunately, I'm not sure when I'll get the opportunity. I might try to get a group going through a local RPG Meetup at some point.
ReplyDeleteWell needless to say I get to play 5E all the time and have two active games...obviously so because I'm the DM and we play what I want to run, heh....OTOH I haven't gotten to play it yet because no one in my groups will actually run a game of D&D....sigh....but I am playing as a player in a periodic 2E game now so that counts for something.
ReplyDeletePlay it already! It's a pretty good game.
ReplyDeleteI've got the PHB and it seems fine, but between DCC RPG and Swords & Wizardry (with a healthy dose of Crypts & Things sprinkled in) I just can't see setting them aside when they cover the bases for me.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm glad I didn't jump on the bandwagon. Just like 4e, 5e seems to fix a bunch of problems that I've never had while simultaneously not fixing the problems I did have.
ReplyDeleteYou 'n' me both, brother!
DeleteI'm collecting as well. Really looking for a 1e or 2e group in Pittsburgh.
ReplyDeleteI'm collecting other stuff, but not 5e
ReplyDeleteMaybe we are just proving why the OSR is so strong... We are all gamers to the core, but because we have our preferences on how to run things, we don't feel the need to change something that isn't broken. Maybe it should stand for Old School Rebels?
ReplyDeleteI will freely admit that I am a game collector -- if I were to try to play all the game systems I have purchased over the years, I could probably go the better part of a year without repeating. Could I have maybe saved that money for other expenses? Most assuredly, but gaming is a hobby that inspires me and I feel no shame in purchasing books that I may not get to play. I see it as a way of supporting good ideas through my purchases.
I have the core books for 5E and definitely like what I have read and see... it can be as crunchy or as simple as you want to make it depending on which options you use... And from what I can tell without getting to play it yet, it looks like a good DM can let the players choose how they want to work it. I don't think one player using the optional feat system is overpowered compared to another with a basic build character. So, right now, I am struggling to find the time to teach my kids to play and am going to try to use 5E because I like so much of what I see, but if I end up falling back to orginal AD&D because that is the system I still have memorized the best, then so be it.
There is no shame in being a collector.
Erik, I'm in the same boat. Starter Set, PHB, DMG, MM, DM screen, starter set minis, Hoard of the Dragon Queen, Rise of Tiamat, along with the Gale Force 9 DM screen and Wizard spell cards.
ReplyDeleteFor now I'm quite content behind the screen running Troll Lord Games A-Series with Castles & Crusades
Will I ever play 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons? I don't know, I'd give a shot though as a player or DM. I liked what I read in the PHB and the content of the DMG (from what I've read of it) is well done. If I stay a collector I'm fine with that. I'll simply consider my purchases a vote for the direction WOTC is going.
I have yet to play it. I thought I wo run it for my students but they wanted me to teach them old school D&D instead. So we're playing ACKS without proficiencies instead
ReplyDeleteYour students are clearly gentlefolk and scholars.
DeleteI'm GMing a Sunday game of 5e, and I play in a bi-weekly Saturday game of 5e.
ReplyDeleteI know this well. I have all the books as well but don't see then getting used anytime soon.

ReplyDeleteSounds like it. This seems to be what the publisher is counting on to move product.
ReplyDeletePersonally I dont understand the hoopla over yet another version of D&D.
Collecting as well - primarily as a way to support the FLGS that let's me use their space to run b/x games. I've only read the starter box rules - saw some concepts i liked, but was wholly uninspired to actually play the game. Nor did I see why it was better than b/x, DCC (which I play when i can) S&W (which i run/play) or any of the various other clones. The most inspiring rules I've read lately are the various Microlite74 editions.
ReplyDeleteNo. By coincidence the game we were running was wrapping up so 5E was the next choice. It's been fun so far and everyone seems to like it. We wouldn't have dropped the games we were playing to start a 5E game - it just happened to work out that way. In my second group we're still playing the Shadowrun game which is likely to continue for a while, but I think one of the players is writing up a 5E campaign for when we finish.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I have the starter box (with basic rules print-out) and the PHB, but not sure when I will play. I'm on my hiatus from gaming to use my spare time to create a consulting business on the side, while still working as an employee at a day job. So gaming has taken a back seat in my life (not for the first time in my life, either). But I've always come back to roleplaying, and will do so again someday.
ReplyDeleteThere is an adventure module named Dragonspear Castle fpr D&D5?
ReplyDelete(I am pretty new to D&D and haven't got any OST experience)
They're back on my bookshelf because 5e does one thing badly and its bad enough to a be a deal breaker; character creation for characters above level 1 takes all night. When players are confronted with race+subrace+class+background+archetype+fighting style+spells+equipment... a kind of paralysis creeps in where the players are flicking back and forth and trying to work out what makes for a viable build.
