ENworld is 92.4% and 7.6% respectively.
There are observations that can be made from these numbers about the number of female gamers in the hobby, but the biggest one is that they are an untaped market for the gaming hobby in general.
68.3% of Tavern visitors are returning visitors, ENworld has a 67.3% rate. Pretty much the same.
So, The Tavern audience consists overwhelmingly of middle aged men. Sounds like my local pub :)

ReplyDeleteI do wonder about accuracy in these stats -- if only because I know of a number of women who have selected "male" as their online gender so as to prevent the unpleasantries of advances from males.

DeleteI wonder how much turnover there has been at ENWorld. When I signed up back in the d20 heyday, most folks there were adults from the conversation. This is important since they'd be 14 years older now, and few adults from 2002 would be still under 35. It does seem like a different crowd now, other than a few folks like Henry and Morrus.
ReplyDeleteIt's possible. ENWorld has always had a reputation as shills for whatever the current edition of D&D is (at least from 3.0 on). Since the D&D fanbase was badly fractured by 4e, I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't wholesale turnover around 2008.

DeleteThe stats are definitely a bad thing, if they're skewed because 51% of the population doesn't feel comfortable being truthful about their most basic genetic identities.
DeleteI very much resemble this demographic. I was an early member over at EnWorld, but after Eric Noah left, so did I. I much prefer the Tavern now.

ReplyDeleteIt makes sense that the Tavern would have an older demographic, given the kinds of games it covers. I mean, I turn 47 in July and I was only four years old when OD&D was first published, and nine when the AD&D DMG came out.
