ZWEIHÄNDER - how many times have you been the Deal of the Day at RPGNow?
Wow, six times since the end of May. Four times in July alone. Heck, it was just Deal of the Day THREE DAYS AGO!
Oh, and just so you all know, July 25th was the real sale day. Five bucks was the lowest price. Today's price is $6.50 (and art free is still PWYW)
There is a point when this becomes spammy. I think we have reached that point and jumped the shark after beating the dead horse and milking the cow...

Well you have to have Publisher Promotion Points to do this, they must have plenty to spare. Fire Born Games doesn't have enough to even submit 1 adventure module.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to comment on any specific publisher, but for clarification, the way it works is that you can submit any item you publish to a queue.
ReplyDeleteYou have to pay "promotion points" which you earn monthly, mostly from your sales and any item in the queue will basically be picked at random each day as the "sale of the day".
Perhaps, with the Christmas in July sale going on, it prevents many items from going "on sale," because they already are?
ReplyDelete¯\_(ツ)_/¯
When you do a deal of the day, you are put into a Que. In the last DOTD I did, I was 33rd in the Que, so I'm not sure how this book is showing up so fast.
ReplyDeleteHey, maybe I'll do one after the Christmas in July sales... Right I'm not eligible it seems. Maybe I misunderstand the requirements - I seem to meet them but maybe the factor the current sale as well.
ReplyDeleteA little bit of background:
ReplyDeleteTo have a game be a Deal Of The Day, you have to have enough Promotion Points to spend. I submit ZWEIHÄNDER every time it expires, and it's thrown into a queue with other deals. That queue is generally less than 20 titles, and is completely randomized.
The reason why larger publishers aren't in 'Deal of the Day' is because they're not willing to take a loss of margin to gain new customers. I am willing to do that. I want people to play the game - cheaply - and eventually buy the hardback when it's ready for print-on-demand.
The reason smaller publishers aren't in 'Deal Of the Day' is because they don't sell enough copies to generate enough Publisher Points. It's a very tough position to be in.
That being said, I believe you can opt out of Deal Of The Day from DTRPG. But once again, I cannot control their random queue.
Hope that helps explain my position as a publisher. Happy to follow up direct if you have any follow-up questions: daniel@grimandperilous.com

ReplyDelete"There is a point when this becomes spammy" Same-day cross-posting to a dozen overlapping G+ communities? :P
ReplyDeleteGlad Daniel swung by for the behind-the-curtain explanation.
Hmm... two communities with this post... RPG Bloggers (which I moderate) and 2,000 Coppers (which I own). It wasn't appropriate for other communities. And yes, there are overlapping G+ communities that may find my posts (or other bloggers) in more than one community at a time. Such is the nature of G Plus.
DeleteAs for the explanation, it actually makes perfect sense and literally means there is very little else in the que.
If you are a publisher looking to snag a quick spot as a Deal of the Day, now is the time to strike. If you don't, we'll get more repeats or "gasp" days without Deals of the Day.
Hey, guess what the deal of the day for July 31st is?
ReplyDeleteWow, that Z-game I can't pronounce is back! Yes, it's today's Deal of the Day. That's a lot.
ReplyDeleteI imagine the lead-up to Gencon has publishers tightening their purse strings in favor of sales at the convention, while smaller publishers don't have enough Publisher Points to get in queue.
DeleteOnce again, I cannot control the queue. But there's no legitimate reason to not submit to the queue if you have the points.
