21 Designers & Makers Fireside Chats Completed over at the Tavern Chat Podcast - 22 More on the Sheet ;)
This afternoon was the 21st Designers & Makers Fireside Chat. There are 19 more scheduled between Monday, February 11th and Thursday, April 11th (and a handful more where we have to pin down a date.)
I've been extremely pleased with how the sessions have gone and I think they've gotten strong (and longer) as I've grown into the role of host, interviewer and fellow Tavern patron just chewing the fat with friends.

Kickstarter and Steve Jackson Games, A Response to Michael S
Thank you, Erik, for sharing our recent "Kickstarter Projects Report" with your readers. We try to share as much info as we can (please see our annual Stakeholders' Report), and with Kickstarter, where so many gamers are helping us to create the things, we thought it essential to continue that transparency.
I noticed that Michael S commented on your share of our report and wanted to answer as best we can. In the comment, Michael wrote:
"I would really enjoy hearing how they manage their KS projects from the inside. Do they have dedicated KS staff? How much of the item is completed before they run a KS? How do they manage all their stretch goals?"
Taking each question one at a time:
* "Do they have dedicated KS staff?" We do not. In most instances in the past, Steve and our marketing staff handled constructing and managing active/ongoing campaigns. Since the Munchkin Unicorns project last summer, I've taken on a large percentage of the Kickstarter management -- including outlining and planning -- with assistance from Steve, Susan, and others as appropriate. (Andrew Hackard, for example, is involved in each Munchkin project.)
* "How much of the item is completed before they run a KS?" That varies from project to project, but we try to have the majority of the work done before even launching a Kickstarter project these days. That both provides us will more info to share -- in Munchkin Steampunk: Girl Genius, for example, the team finished all of the cards and prepared them for final review before the campaign launched -- and helps us to avoid the temptation to over-complicate a project.
We don't always have the work completed before going to Kickstarter -- the Hexagram zine project, for example, is still being created -- but we try to have a lot finished. This makes it more likely that we can deliver on schedule . . . or at least close to on schedule.
* "How do they manage all their stretch goals?" Just like everyone else: A mix of marketing and magery. Stretch goals serve to maintain excitement as a campaign unfolds and to improve the final product. The trick is in balancing momentum while, more importantly, not transforming a financial success into a failure.
The majority of our stretch goals are written down and planned before we push the "launch" button -- here is where it helps that most of the work is also done at this time -- but then we're flexible with positioning those stretch goals in the project. We know roughly how much each one adds to the project's expense, so we can shift them around as necessary in reaction to a campaign's performance.
Additionally, some stretch goals are "we must do this," so we try and push those to the front of the campaign. The last thing we ever want to see is that one of our "we really want this to happen" stretch goals fails to unlock. That would lead to more crying than we've seen since the Ogre Designer's Edition project.
Michael, I'm not sure if this properly answers your questions, but I hope that we've provided you with a little more info that helps you to better understand how we approach Kickstarter.

Interesting Exchange I had With a Reporter About Gail Gygax - Soon to Be a "Story" I am Sure

(I was wary from the start, as a quick Google search of REPORTER didn't show a preponderance of balanced articles and as a retired law enforcement officer, I have an innate distrust of reporters and lawyers. But I was willing to be open-minded)
My initial email to REPORTER
Before I agree to be interviewed I'd like to know the method of the interview (email, phone, skype, discord, etc) as well as some details of the direction of the questions if not the questions themselves in advance.
For what its worth, the EGG Revocable Trust and the Gygax Memorial Fund are two vastly separate entities - the first controls the IP and is in Gail's hands and is a private matter between Gail and whoever she may license the IP to. The GMF is a Not For Profit and is subject to public scrutiny. Gail gets testy when folks forget the difference.
My focus of interest has been on the GMF.

("Legacy" is defined as "an amount of money or property left to someone in a will." This is what Gary left to Gail via the Trust. Again, the rights to Gary's unpublished works are controlled by Gail. I won't be able to answer your questions as I don't report on Gary's legacy. His legacy is his IP, and except when it comes up in the news I don't mention it. Gary left it to Gail via the Trust and that is that.
I have no insights into Gary's children and their plans for their father's legacy. Again, the IP was left solely to Gail.
My thoughts on the memorial you've already read. There is nothing for me to add.

("Characterizing your blog in our article". Interesting. Let's look at the definition of "Characterizing": "to describe the distinctive nature or features of" - interesting, huh? So, The Tavern is going to be labeled as __________ fill in the blank.
It appears obvious to me that the story in question is less about Gary and his "legacy" and more about Gail Gygax. Judging from the reporter's past work, I doubt it will be critiquing Gail all that much. Gee, wonder hat the angle could be? Add your thoughts below.)

There are nearly 8,000 posts at tenkarstavern.com and it will be impossible for me to discuss specific posts that you may refer to without prior knowledge of said posts.
I'd like a list of questions up front so I can properly prepare for an interview that is expected to last as long as half an hour.

I won't be able to answer your questions as I don't report on Gary's legacy. His legacy is his IP, and except when it comes up in the news I don't mention it. Gary left it to Gail via the Trust and that is that.
I have no insights into Gary's children and their plans for their father's legacy. Again, the IP was left solely to Gail.
My thoughts on the memorial you've already read. There is nothing for me to add.

It appears obvious to me that the story in question is less about Gary and his "legacy" and more about Gail Gygax. Judging from the reporter's past work, I doubt it will be critiquing Gail all that much. Gee, wonder hat the angle could be? Add your thoughts below.)
Spotify Buys Anchor - Seeks to Become Netflix of Audio
What interesting times we live in. Anchor, the home to many OSR and RPG podcasts due in large part to its ease of use, was just bought by Spotify.

Spotify made a major step in building up its original content on Wednesday, announcing plans to acquire privately held podcast producers Gimlet Media and Anchor. The move is just the next step in Spotify's ambitions to become the Netflix of audio by accelerating its spending on original content.
The music streaming service said it plans to spend up to $500 million this year on more podcasting acquisitions. CEO Daniel Ek said in a CNBC interview with Jim Cramer and David Faber that while "the magnitude of the numbers won't be the same" as Netflix's massive spending on original content, "I don't think it's unlikely that it is a Netflix type of story," in terms of increasing investment in the area.
"It's really about expanding our mission from just being about music to being about all of audio and being the world's leading audio platform," Ek said on Squawk On the Street.
Terms of the deals with Gimlet and Anchor were not disclosed, but late last week, Recode and Vulture podcast critic Nicholas Quah reported Gimlet would sell for north of $200 million. According to Quah, those terms would make it the largest podcast industry acquisition to date.

Anchor brings a different part of the equation to Spotify with its easy-to-use podcast creation technology. Anchor serves as a platform for podcast creators to make and distribute their shows. Anchor had 15 billion hours of content on its platform in Q4, Ek said in the blog post.

Spotify picked up podcast companies Gimlet and Anchor as it looks for new listeners, the streaming service said Wednesday.
"Our podcast users spend almost twice the time on the platform, and spend even more time listening to music," Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said in a statement. "We have also seen that by having unique programming, people who previously thought Spotify was not right for them will give it a try."

We posted a report on our 2018 projects back in November, and that proved to be as valuable a tool for us as it was informative for you . . . so here we go again! With the addition of a second Kickstarter account – you're following both the Steve Jackson Games and Warehouse 23 accounts, right? – we've got more flexibility when it comes to Kickstarter and we'll continue to expand on our experience with and use of crowdfunding this year, making reports like this one more and more important as we learn.
In 2018, we ran a total of nine Kickstarter campaigns, three of which are now completely closed and added to the "done" list. So far in 2019, we've run three campaigns (two of which are active today). Here's a look at all of the open campaigns, in reverse chronological order.

Ogre Battlefields

This expansion for Ogre Sixth Edition and the Ogre Designer's Edition did much better than any of us at the office anticipated, and you kept us on our toes as your support kept breaking stretch goal after stretch goal. We wrapped up our work and submitted the files to the factory before Chinese New Year, so everything is still on track to release as promised in the campaign. The only items not yet at print are the playmats, but the work is done and we'll be submitting those files in a month or so (the playmats are printed in the U.S., so we have a little more time to spare).
Munchkin Steampunk: Girl Genius
November 1 to November 21
2,195 backers and on schedule
Steve worked with Phil Foglio to adapt the Girl Genius comic to Munchkin Steampunk, and then you joined in and unlocked every stretch goal that we had to offer. The game went to print and is, at the moment, in the final stages of manufacturing and expected to deliver on schedule (if not a little early).
Illuminati Coins
October 9 to October 17
722 backers and on schedule
The coins have completed the manufacturing stage and are now on a ship and headed to our fulfillment warehouse. We expect to deliver the coins slightly ahead of schedule.
Ogrezine II
September 13 to September 28
843 backers and on schedule
Articles are still being posted, U.S. physical rewards have been delivered, and the international physical rewards are on their way to backers. This campaign was affected by our difficulties with international fulfillment (see Munchkin Unicorns, below, for more info).
The Fantasy Trip Legacy Edition

The game is complete and on a ship. We will start fulfillment next month, and expect U.S. backers to start seeing the rewards in the last weeks of March. International rewards will ship as soon as we can manage, but the difficulties that struck Munchkin Unicorns (see below) have affected our expectations for international fulfillment of The Fantasy Trip Legacy Edition.

U.S. rewards delivered on schedule and went smoothly. International rewards, unfortunately, have proven a challenge. We're a few months behind on delivering the international rewards, but expect to see everything in the hands of backers in March. What happened? Working to ship rewards from in-country to make delivery less expensive for international backers became a complex web of paperwork that caused delay after delay. How are we handling this going forward? For future campaigns, we're estimating international delivery at two to three months after U.S. rewards are delivered. This will better align with the realities of international Kickstarter fulfillment.
That's nine open Kickstarter projects, two of which are on the water, two at the factory and in manufacturing, two affected by international fulfillment delays, one in the final stages of office work, and two still funding on Kickstarter.
One thing that expanding our use of Kickstarter has done is given everyone a closer look at how the sausage is made; in addition to these nine projects, we have dozens more in various stages. For example, there are two Kickstarter projects on the water . . . plus another five on a ship. And as for those two Kickstarter projects at the factory, they're currently accompanied by another 16 active projects at the factory.
As you can tell, Kickstarter is a growing part of our plans, but traditional distribution is still the majority of our business. With the market always changing, we'll do what we have to in order to adapt and keep making games for a long, long time to come.

This time we are looking at Hexagram #1, an Old-School RPG Zine for The Fantasy Trip. Sure, I'm still waiting on my The Fantasy Trip boxed set, but now it will have a zine companion ;)
Welcome to Hexagram, an old-school RPG zine for The Fantasy Trip that, we hope, won't be a one-and-done project. Starting out as a 16 page (8.5-inch by 5.5-inch) B&W publication, your support has made the zine a reality and, with luck, will push the page count higher and higher as we attract more backers.

How Many Blogger Hosted Blogs Are Going to be Hosed By the Impending Google + Shutdown? Judging by the Latest G + Update - Many
Here's the latest Google + Impending shutdown update. There is a part that should greatly concern bloggers that use Blogger and Google + for post comments.
Shutting down Google+ for consumer (personal) accounts on April 2, 2019

In December 2018, we announced our decision to shut down Google+ for consumers in April 2019 due to low usage and challenges involved in maintaining a successful product that meets consumers’ expectations. We want to thank you for being part of Google+ and provide next steps, including how to download your photos and other content.
On April 2nd, your Google+ account and any Google+ pages you created will be shut down and we will begin deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts. Photos and videos from Google+ in your Album Archive and your Google+ pages will also be deleted. You can download and save your content, just make sure to do so before April. Note that photos and videos backed up in Google Photos will not be deleted.
The process of deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts, Google+ Pages, and Album Archive will take a few months, and content may remain through this time. For example, users may still see parts of their Google+ account via activity log and some consumer Google+ content may remain visible to G Suite users until consumer Google+ is deleted.
As early as February 4th, you will no longer be able to create new Google+ profiles, pages, communities or events. See the full FAQ for more details and updates leading up to the shutdown.
If you’re a Google+ Community owner or moderator, you may download and save your data for your Google+ Community. Starting early March 2019, additional data will be available for download, including author, body, and photos for every community post in a public community. Learn more
If you sign in to sites and apps using the Google+ Sign-in button, these buttons will stop working in the coming weeks but in some cases may be replaced by a Google Sign-in button. You’ll still be able to sign in with your Google Account wherever you see Google Sign-in buttons. Learn more
If you’ve used Google+ for comments on your own or other sites, this feature will be removed from Blogger by February 4th and other sites by March 7th. All your Google+ comments on all sites will be deleted starting April 2, 2019. (empasis mine) Learn more

There was nothing more to learn. Some bloggers, folks like Zak Smith are going to lose years of comments. 1,000s of comments. Sure you can download the comments but what good does that do. Are you manually going to reload them as single comments streaming the whole thread? Besides, the way Google + comments worked in Blogger, you'd have different threads based upon communities where it was shared. What a fucking shit show.
Google enabled the integration of Blogger and Google + 6 years ago. A large number of Blogger bloggers made the switch and now they are fucked.
Needless to say, moving The Tavern to another host is on the short list of things to do. I suspect Blogger may be the next Google app to face the firing squad.
I've Gotten a Peek at the Far Away Land / Swords & Wizardry Mashup Playtest Rules and I'm Psyched!
Dirk Stanley sent me the latest version of the playtest rules where he converts his Far Away Lands setting from his own rule system (which is awesome in its own right) to a modified Swords & Wizardry engine, drawing some inspiration from Swords & Wizardry Continual Light.
I can not state enough how much I want to run this. Like right now! heh.
I was thinking of giving World Anvil a shot at managing my next campaign, and I was going to use The Black Isle as the setting using SWCL as the ruleset, but Dirk has severely tempted me.
As Dirk gets closer to release, I'll snag him for an interview on The Tavern Chat Podcast.
